How is 2023 treating you so far? I hope it’s been amazing! A new year usually means new goals, but did you know there’s an approach to goal setting that can make you more likely to achieve them?

Let’s get into it!

A New Year’s Resolution is great, but it’s always felt a bit limiting to me because there are a lot of different areas of my life where I want to set goals for the year.

So the first tactic that can help with achieving your goals is to break them into categories.

For instance, what goals do you have for the spiritual, financial, career, intellectual, fitness, and family parts of your life? Your categories might be a little different, but you get the idea.

Once you have your categories, identify no more than three goals for the year in each category (better if it’s just one!) that you want to achieve in the new year. Why no more than three? Because we have to keep up our motivation for an entire year!

To do that, we need some wins, and if we divide our attention between too many goals, we can set ourselves up for failure. Remember, you can always add more goals as you check one off of your original list.

Don’t rush this original list. Really put some thought into the one to three things you can do this year to move the needle in each category. Effective goal setting takes a bit of an archaeological dig on ourselves.

For instance, if you want a better relationship with your kids, you might think the answer is spending more time with them, but maybe the answer is not being on your phone or having more patience during the time you’re already spending with them.

The idea is to peel away the obvious, knee-jerk responses and analyze what core action you can take to achieve your desired outcome.

Next up, we’re going to make your goals Einstein goals, and I’m going to give you a cheat sheet for your 2023 marketing goals.
